Silicone Hull Coating System

Hempel has introduced Hempaguard Ultima, a high-performance silicone hull coating system. The two-layer system is designed to enhance vessel performance and reduce fuel consumption, enabling customers to reach their sustainability objectives while also achieving operational excellence.

The system offers up to 21% fuel savings, 160 fouling-free idle days, and a reduction in speed loss to 0.9%. It also ensures long-lasting surface smoothness, reducing the risk of fouling even in later stages of the docking cycle.

According to the company, with Hempaguard Ultima, a vessel’s hull can achieve a more stable surface smoothness, even into the fourth or fifth year of the docking cycle3, reducing the risk of fouling after long service periods, even when the coating’s hydrogel and biocide can start losing some effectiveness.

Biobased Hyperdispersant

Lubrizol has introduced Solsperse™ 29000 Hyperdispersant. The hyperdispersant is designed to enable coating and ink formulators to achieve pigment dispersion and stability without sacrificing quality or stability while enabling ever-stringent sustainability initiatives for 100% solids systems and a range of solvent-based systems. It contains 50-55% biobased content from plant sources and is built from renewable resources that allow formulators to realize additional sustainability benefits.

As a 100% active dispersant containing no solvents, and flowable at room temperature, it addresses environmental and regulatory concerns while improving manufacturing, shipping, and storage efficiency.

Spray-on Insulation Coating for Oil and Gas Infrastructure

PPG has launched PPG PITT-THERM® 909 spray-on insulation (SOI) coating. The silicone-based, water-repellent coating is designed for high-heat environments in the oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, and other infrastructure industries.

The company reports that thermal testing demonstrates that the coating endures continuous and cyclic temperatures as high as 500 °F, and by reducing heat transfer, external surfaces remain safe to touch at up to 310 °F, significantly reducing the risk of burns. It also meets the requirements for the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E84 Class A fire rating.

The coating can be applied to both hot and cold substrates, allowing assets to remain in service during application. Application testing also shows that fewer coats are necessary compared to traditional SOI coatings. It can be applied in thicknesses of up to 250 mils (6.35 mm) per coat and depending on the specific application requirements, only one or two coats are needed. The company says despite the reduced number of layers, it can achieve a higher total coating thickness of up to 500 mils and cure times are comparable to competing products.

New Effect Pigments

Sun Chemical’s Paliocrom aluminum effects feature two new launch grades this year: Paliocrom Brilliant Ruby EH 5050 (L 3558) and Paliocrom Satin Gold EH 3607 (L 2138).

Paliocrom Brilliant Ruby EH 5050 (L 3558) is formulated based on iron-oxide-coated aluminum flakes of the silver-dollar type for modern automotive and high-performance industrial coatings. This new grade comes in the form of a propylene glycol slurry and is suitable both for solventborne and waterborne systems and combines hiding power with high brilliance and lightness.

Paliocrom Satin Gold EH 3607 (L 2138) is a mid-shade golden aluminum-based effect pigment with distinct satin character, high chroma, and smooth appearance. It delivers unique color travel and excellent gloss levels and allows for thin film applications of automotive basecoats due to its small particle size.

Grout and Topcoat Technology

Sherwin-Williams has introduced Accelera® One, an ultra-high solids clear grout and topcoat designed to cure rapidly and enable the application of two coats within the same day while also providing extended working time for installers. According to the company, its resistance to harsh chemicals and sterilants works well in sensitive environments such as pharmaceutical, biotech, life science, and healthcare facilities.

The company says the product features a simple application process as well as a fast cure and long working time. In ambient temperatures, it features an extended application time of 20 minutes yet also cures quickly, allowing for foot traffic within two hours at 8 mils applied thickness—enabling facilities to resume normal operations. The cure time can be modified based on ambient conditions.

According to the company, Accelera® One resists many harsh chemicals and biopharma sterilants and is UV-stable indoors, ensuring long-lasting performance. Available in a clear gloss finish, it can be used in any Sherwin-Williams decorative flake or quartz flooring system and is being featured as the clear grout and topcoat in eight new systems.
