BASF Achieves Construction Milestone at Zhanjiang Verbund Site
BASF has reached a major construction milestone at its Zhanjiang Verbund site in China, with the successful mechanical completion of the first batch of plants in the acrylics complex, including the glacial acrylic acid (GAA) and butyl acrylate (BA) plants.
Graco Inc. to Acquire Color Service S.R.L.
Graco Inc. announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Color Service S.R.L., a global manufacturer of automated dosing systems for powder and liquid applications for €63 million, subject to customary adjustments. The transaction is expected to close in Graco’s fiscal third quarter, following the satisfaction of closing conditions.
Dürr and Cetec Partner on Liquid Painting Solutions
Dürr, a provider in painting and industrial automation technologies, has entered a partnership with Cetec, the first integrator of liquid painting solutions for general industry in Brazil. This partnership enables the structured delivery of Dürr technologies to a broader range of Brazilian industries. Cetec is one of Brazil's leading manufacturers of industrial paint systems.
Lubrizol Opens Center in Singapore
Lubrizol has opened its Southeast Asia Innovation Center in Jurong, Singapore. According to the company, the center, designed to strengthen collaboration and drive market-relevant innovation, supports Lubrizol’s commitment to delivering high-value solutions and helping customers in Southeast Asia and beyond to bring products to market faster.
PPG Collaborates with Lucid Motors
PPG and electric vehicle (EV) maker Lucid Motors have collaborated on developing unique exterior color effects for Lucid Motors luxury EV ranges using PPG ANDARO® pigment nanodispersion technology.
Compliance Date for National Aerosol Rule Moved to January 2027
On July 2, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published in the Federal Register interim final action to revise the compliance date in the recent amendments to the national aerosol coatings rule. In response to industry concerns, EPA is delaying the compliance date from July 17, 2025, to Jan. 17, 2027.
PHMSA Issues Notices of Proposed Rulemaking Aimed at Reducing Regulatory Burdens
On July 1, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued several notices of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) in the Federal Register aimed at reducing existing regulatory burdens that impact our industry. Notably, one of the NPRMs responds to a petition ACA filed in 2017.
California’s DTSC Proposes to Add Microplastics to Candidate Chemicals List of Safer Consumer Products Program
California’s Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) is proposing a definition of microplastics, and the addition of microplastics to the candidate chemicals list under California’s Safer Consumer Products Program. The agency is accepting comments on the proposal through Aug. 4, 2025.
SCAQMD Public Hearing for Proposed Amendments to Solvent Cleaning Operations Rule Set for June 6
California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) on May 6 issued a notice of public hearing for Proposed Amended Rule 1171 (Solvent Cleaning Operations). The district has also published the draft rule language and draft staff report on its website.
Statement of the American Coatings Association on Tariffs Imposed on Canada, Mexico and China
New tariffs imposed on the paint and coatings industry’s largest trading partners will introduce disruptions and increased costs into the production of essential consumer products, including medical devices and pharmaceuticals, food production equipment and grocery items, automobiles, and aerospace applications, among others.

KANSAI HELIOS Opens New Production Facility in Ohio
KANSAI HELIOS, a member of the international KANSAI PAINT Group, officially opened its newest production facility in Johnstown, Ohio. The company says its 135,000 square-foot site dedicated to powder coatings will be the central hub for serving key automotive and general industry markets in North America.
IMCD N.V. Announces New Appointments
IMCD N.V., a global partner for the distribution and formulation of specialty chemicals and ingredients, announced that Andreas Igerl, currently regional president of APAC and a member of the IMCD Executive Committee, has been appointed regional president of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) effective September 1. In this new role, he will assume leadership of the global Industrial Business Groups progressively over the course of 2025. Narendra Varde, currently managing director of India, has been appointed president of Asia-Pacific (APAC), succeeding Andreas Igerl.
David Fairhurst Presented with ACA’s 2025 CoatingsTech Best Paper Award
ACA presented its 2025 CoatingsTech Best Paper Award to David Fairhurst, Ph.D., president of Colloid Consultants, Ltd. Fairhurst received the honor at the 2025 CoatingsTech Conference for his paper, “Low Field (LF)-NMR Relaxation – A Useful Technique for QC and to Determine the Equivalency of Materials for Coatings Formulations,” coauthored by Ravi Sharma, Ph.D., and principal research fellow at Mageleka Inc.; and Ralph Jan Wörheide, M.Eng., and president and founder of Metromation Inc.
