PPG Partners with Xiaomi EV on Automotive Paint Colors
PPG is collaborating with Xiaomi EV on the “100 Colors Project,” an initiative aimed at redefining automotive personalization. As part of Xiaomi’s Customization Service, the project will introduce 100 exclusive paint colors over the next three years, co-developed with global coatings suppliers.
Evonik Strengthens Presence in Japan
Evonik has opened its first fumed alumina production facility “Alu5” in Yokkaichi, Japan. This marks a step forward in the company’s strategy to serve the Asian market with advanced aluminum oxide-based solutions. The facility will manufacture AEROXIDE®, an advanced fumed aluminum oxide solution renowned for its exceptional properties for a variety of applications.
Nouryon Invests in China to Support Demand for Polymers
Nouryon has completed capacity expansion for metal alkyls production at its site in Jiaxing, which will ultimately double its ability to produce triethylaluminum, a co-catalyst used in the manufacture of polyethylene and polypropylene for packaging, automotive components and consumer goods. According to the company, these developments will further strengthen the strategic importance of its Jiaxing site

BASF has entered into a binding agreement to divest its automotive OEM coatings, refinish coatings, and surface treatment businesses – collectively known as BASF Coatings – to funds managed by The Carlyle Group, in partnership with the Qatar Investment Authority.
Compliance Date for National Aerosol Rule Moved to January 2027
On July 2, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published in the Federal Register interim final action to revise the compliance date in the recent amendments to the national aerosol coatings rule. In response to industry concerns, EPA is delaying the compliance date from July 17, 2025, to Jan. 17, 2027.
PHMSA Issues Notices of Proposed Rulemaking Aimed at Reducing Regulatory Burdens
On July 1, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued several notices of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) in the Federal Register aimed at reducing existing regulatory burdens that impact our industry. Notably, one of the NPRMs responds to a petition ACA filed in 2017.
California’s DTSC Proposes to Add Microplastics to Candidate Chemicals List of Safer Consumer Products Program
California’s Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) is proposing a definition of microplastics, and the addition of microplastics to the candidate chemicals list under California’s Safer Consumer Products Program. The agency is accepting comments on the proposal through Aug. 4, 2025.
SCAQMD Public Hearing for Proposed Amendments to Solvent Cleaning Operations Rule Set for June 6
California’s South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) on May 6 issued a notice of public hearing for Proposed Amended Rule 1171 (Solvent Cleaning Operations). The district has also published the draft rule language and draft staff report on its website.
Statement of the American Coatings Association on Tariffs Imposed on Canada, Mexico and China
New tariffs imposed on the paint and coatings industry’s largest trading partners will introduce disruptions and increased costs into the production of essential consumer products, including medical devices and pharmaceuticals, food production equipment and grocery items, automobiles, and aerospace applications, among others.

David Fairhurst Presented with ACA’s 2025 CoatingsTech Best Paper Award
ACA presented its 2025 CoatingsTech Best Paper Award to David Fairhurst, Ph.D., president of Colloid Consultants, Ltd. Fairhurst received the honor at the 2025 CoatingsTech Conference for his paper, “Low Field (LF)-NMR Relaxation – A Useful Technique for QC and to Determine the Equivalency of Materials for Coatings Formulations,” coauthored by Ravi Sharma, Ph.D., and principal research fellow at Mageleka Inc.; and Ralph Jan Wörheide, M.Eng., and president and founder of Metromation Inc.
