Solar Reflectivity Issue

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) has completed the development of a Wall Product Rating Standard that rates exterior wall products based on the surface radiative properties. The CRRC is updating their ANSI/CRRC S100 “Standard Test Methods for Determining Radiative Properties of Materials” standard that serves as the basis of their methods for rating the surface radiative properties of roof coatings to include the methodologies needed to test exterior wall coatings. The solar reflective roof and wall product requirements in the CRRC’s programs, as well as, future green building codes and standards, may impact the pigments used in these coatings. Given the focus on climate change and limiting the urban heat island effect, the CRRC is considering creating a Pavement Coatings Program. In 2023, ACA's Katherine Berry was elected to the CRRC's Board of Directors. Read More…

EPA ANPRM on Used Drum Management and Reconditioning

In the fall of 2023, EPA announced an advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) on used drum management and reconditioning and is seeking comments on regulatory and non-regulatory options to minimize risks to human health and the environment during the entire lifecycle of used containers of hazardous materials. ACA Staff is working through the Transport Committee and the Environmental Management Committee to gather input and comments from its members on the potential impact to the coatings industry. ACA submitted a comment letter in November 2023 addressing ACA member's concerns. Read More…

ACA Science & Technology Committee Initiatives

The ACA Science and Technology Committee finalized the third third technology roadmap on “Durability and Water-resistance of Waterborne Systems" and released this on the website in February 2024. The Research and Development Management subcommittee plans to hold a workshop with the University of Minnesota's I-PRIME Consortium in May 2024 to discuss and showcase research being done that addresses gaps identified in the second technology roadmap "Lightweighting and Novel Substrates." ACA released its "Explore Coatings" web hub as part of its efforts to raise the profile of the coatings industry, and this hub offers ways to connect with the target audience via an online job board and profiles universities with programs in coatings science. Additionally, a two-minute video is showcased on this site as a way to promote coatings careers among STEM college students. Finally, the conference program for the 2024 Coatings Show has been finalized. Read More…
