Plant-Based Topcoat for Furniture

Sherwin-Williams has debuted the latest addition to its range of plant-based products: Laqva Top BIO EG 1352B, a one-component waterborne topcoat developed for furniture and interior joinery. Formulated to offer excellent adhesion to UV, waterborne, and acrylic primers, the company says the product provides good scratch and chemical resistance, reducing the need for frequent maintenance or refinishing.

Polyurethane Dispersion for Wood Floor Finishes

Lubrizol has introduced Sancure™ 942 Polyurethane Dispersion, a waterborne, high-solids polyurethane dispersion (PUD) intended for residential and commercial wood floor finishes and OEM wood coatings. According to Lubrizol, the PUD offers protection from wear, chemical resistance properties for enhanced durability, and adhesion to multiple substrates. It is designed to enable formulations that provide more coverage per volume, reducing the number of applications required for desired performance and faster return to service.

PFAS-Alternative Block Additives 

Dow has launched TRITON™ FCX-800 and TRITON™ FCX-810 surfactants. These biodegradable PFAS-alternative block additives are designed to replace fluorosurfactants in waterborne coatings while offering equivalent or better block performance in multiple paint systems. According to Dow, the surfactants provide early and hot block resistance in both white and deep base paints.

Automated Spectrophotometer for Automotive Refinish 

Axalta has introduced Axalta Irus Scan, a fully automated spectrophotometer for use as part of its Axalta Irus 3-step digital color management system for automotive refinish. The handheld tool is designed to detect and match hues that shift at different observation angles and analyze gloss levels for a complete color match. According to the company, the spectrophotometer provides real-time surface visualization for enhanced accuracy, boosting productivity and reducing waste and rework.

High-Performance Polyimides

Arkema, and its affiliate, PI Advanced Materials, have introduced a new brand name for their high-performance polyimide product—Zenimid™. The polyimide, engineered to perform in demanding environments, is designed to offer dimensional stability, flexibility, heat resistance, chemical resistance, and electrical insulation. The material is available in film, varnish, and stock shape. Applications include FPCBs and graphite sheet in smart devices, battery management systems (BMS), and 5G infrastructure.

Energy-Curable Coatings for Metal

PPG has unveiled its DURANEXT™ UV/EB portfolio of energy-curable coatings for coiled metal. The family of products includes electron-beam and ultraviolet curable backers, primers, basecoats, and clearcoats. According to PPG, DuraNEXT products feature lower energy usage, water consumption, and CO2 emissions, compared to traditional thermal cure coatings, and does not require the use of very high temperatures to drive the curing process. The liquid coating is designed to be converted into a fully cured solid finish in seconds, without any significant loss of thickness or weight, the company says.

Biobased Defoamer

Elementis recently rolled out DAPRO® BIO 9910, a defoamer with 96% biobased carbon content, and C14 verified, specifically designed for water-based coatings. Based on a vegetable oil/wax composition, it is intended to be a sustainable alternative to mineral oil/ petroleum-based defoamers, formulated for use in architectural, industrial, and wood coatings. The company says that the defoamer helps prevent foam during both manufacturing and application and is compatible with a broad range of pigmented and nonpigmented systems.

Thick-Film Barrier Protection

Induron Protective Coatings has launched Perma-Clean 100 Single-Leg (PC100 SL). The product is designed to provide thick-film barrier protection without requiring complex plural component spray equipment. According to the company, the slower reaction time of PC100 SL enables applicators to reduce equipment costs and minimize waste and downtime since applicators do not need to continually purge catalyzed material to prevent it from setting inside equipment.

Zinc-Based Pigments

Eckart has launched two zinc-based pigments, ProFLAKE® Zn Hydro PM 3090 and STANDART® Zinc Matt Black. According to the company, ProFLAKE is the only stabilized zinc flake pigment for water-based systems and  is intended as an alternative to solventborne zinc systems for applications such as solar frames, pipes, and ACE equipment.

STANDART® Zinc Matt Black, a black zinc flake powder pigment designed to provide a deep anthracite matte black finish for basecoats, primers, and coatings, offers corrosion resistance for the automotive and general fasteners industry, including dip spin applications on bolts, screws, nuts, washers, clamps, and clips.

Digital Micrometer

Gardco has introduced the RTM Digital Micrometer, a handheld gauge designed to simplify surface‑profile checks performed with Testex™ replica tape. The instrument,  intended to help inspectors verify that blast-cleaned steel meets the required surface profile for long-lasting coating adhesion and corrosion protection, features a color display, a  micrometer that can toggle between microns and mils, and storage up to 250 readings, allowing data export via USB.
