Editor’s note: This column is the fourth in a series of roundups of product releases to be highlighted at the 2023 European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg, Germany.

Univar Solutions Coatings

Illinois-based Univar Solutions will talk about their sustainable coatings products at ECS.

The company says that they offer products that are APEO-free or APE-free, and/or low VOC. Those products include white reflective roof coatings, high-performance maintenance coatings, and high solids coatings.

Visit Univar at Booth 116 in Hall 3C. Agnes Y Klong, EMEA technical manager for Univar Solutions, will also present “Helping Build a Better World Through Sustainable Solutions” on March 28 at 12:10 p.m.

BYK Additives

At ECS, BYK plans to introduce two corn starch-based polymers with wax-like properties—the additives CERAFLOUR 1003 and CERAFLOUR 1004—and CERAFLOUR 1010, a micronized wax.

Both additives ensure good matting while maintaining high transparency, according to the Wesel, Germany-based company.

CERAFLOUR 1003 gives a slight surface texture and provides a similar matting effect at different observation angles and is especially recommended for wood and furniture coatings as well as for architectural coatings.

CERAFLOUR 1004, on the other hand, has finer particles and results in a slight matting effect in combination with high transparency and a smooth, soft, and silky surface feel. BYK recommends it in wood and furniture coatings, coil coatings, and architectural coatings.

Based on rape seed, CERAFLOUR 1010 is a micronized wax that is designed for optimal matting efficiency and mechanical resistance. According to BYK, this makes it ideally suited for modern wood coating systems such as natural look formulations, general industrial coatings, and architectural coatings.

Huntsman Coatings, Mono-Polyether Amines, and Polyetheramines

Texas-based company Huntsman will launch three new products at ECS.

The new products include POLYRESYST® IC6005 polyurethane system—an intumescent coating developed for the construction industry that the company says can provide passive fire performance alongside strong protective properties. Visitors to Huntsman’s booth at ECS can see this system on an I- beam, a cross-laminated timber panel, and a series of tiles.

Huntsman will also introduce a new biobased coating system.

The third product is a new mono-polyether amine, JEFFAMINE® M-3085 amine, which has a higher molecular weight than the commonly used JEFFAMINE® M-2070 amine and JEFFAMINE® M-1000 amine. The new amine can be used as a raw material for the synthesis of pigment dispersants or as a building block in reactive surfactants used in the emulsification or dispersion processes of epoxy resins in water.

Two Huntsman employees will speak at the conference. On Tuesday, March 28, Steven Buvens, application specialist, will deliver a paper on “The Use of Mono-Functional Polyetheramines in Waterborne Epoxy Resins” from 1:30 p.m to 2:00 p.m. in Session 22 in the St. Petersburg Room. On Wednesday, March 29, Stefan Priemen, technical manager, will deliver a product presentation on “Novel Fast Curing Intumescent Polyurethane Coating System” from 10:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. at Booth 243 in Hall 5.

Visit Huntsman at the show at Booth 371 in Hall 5.

Tolsa Rheological Additives

Tolsa SA, based in Madrid, Spain, is a supplier of specialized additives for the paints and coatings industry and will showcase its portfolio of rheological additives at ECS.

Tolsa will highlight its Pangel® and Cimsil® series of rheological additives for water- and solvent-based paints and coatings and construction materials additives. The product range is based on a variety of special clays, including sepiolite, attapulgite, montmorillonite, and saponite, and each is designed for easy build up, shear thinning, and thixotropic gel structures.

Those product lines include:

  • Pangel S Series rheological additives, which are produced from high-purity sepiolite and are designed to deliver good suspension and anti-sagging capacity that are unaffected by electrolytes, according to Tolsa;
  • Pangel W Series additives, which are made for anti-sagging, water retention, and brushability;
  • Pangel M Series additives, which incorporate sodium bentonite that the company says adds stability and viscosity control with fast dispersion capacity under high solid systems and low shear systems;
  • Pangel B Series, for solventborne systems, which are rheological organoclay additives that are based on high-purity sepiolite. Tolsa says that they are designed to provide extra performance, additional suspension capacity, anti-sagging, and homogenizing properties;
  • Pangel OM Series, which are rheological organoclay additives based on high-purity bentonite to enable easier incorporation; and
  • Cimsil series, which is a line of construction additives for mortars, cement, and gypsum-based products.

ECKART Pigments

ECKART, a producer of effect pigments in Hartenstein, Germany, will showcase its new range of product innovations designed to reduce the carbon footprint at ECS.

The BRILLIANCE RETHOUGHT effect pigments include products based on recycled aluminum, pastes and powders for compostable systems, Emetallic inks suitable for paper recycling, NIR SILVER pigments for automatic plastics recycling, and the biobased the MASTERSAFE BCR product line. ECKART will also introduce EDELSTEIN Sapphire Blue with the Spacer technology, a class of pearlescent pigments. The company will unveil new colors and special effect pigments for autonomous driving, as well as zinc flake and alloy solutions for heavy-duty coatings.
