Enzymatic polymerization is emerging as a scalable process to polymerize sucrose into engineered polysaccharides. Polymer architecture and material properties can be controlled to provide the foundation for novel differentiated biomaterial platforms. One example is alpha-1,3-polyglucose, which was prepared using this bioprocess. In this American Coatings AWARD-winning article, initial results applying this polymer in architectural coating applications are detailed.

BASF is further developing its EFKA IO line of products for anti-static paints. By providing conductivity to latex paint, Efka IO’s may be able to eliminate the buildup of static charges, thereby reducing dust accumulation in hard-to-reach places such as baseboards and crown molding. This technology has potentially wide-reaching applicability into automotive brake dust repellency on tire rims, dust repellency on sensor equipment, or reduction of dust accumulation for improved visibility on agriculture/construction equipment windshields.
