8:30 am – 11:30 am
Bio-based Materials for Coatings: An Expanded View  R&D_ICON
Dave Grewell
Professor,  North Dakota State University
Shan Jiang, Assistant Professor, Materials Science and Engineering, Iowa State University
Bio-based materials are touted for playing  a key role in sustainability efforts, but which ones currently being developed fit into coatings formulations? This short course will explore the research and issues surrounding the use of bio-based materials relevant to coatings, and offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

8:30 am – 11:30 am
Sustainability and Coatings: Technology Accomplishments and Accounting
Ghasideh Pourhashem, Assistant Professor, Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials (CPM) & Center for Sustainable Materials Science, North Dakota State University
This short course will cover the basics of one of the most pressing future issues to be faced by coatings: reliable life-cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis. It will address how sustainability is assessed to make meaningful comparisons of one coating to another for sustainability and environmental impact. It will also examine how coatings’ contribution to sustainability should be portrayed.

8:30 am – 11:30 am
Basics of Formulation: A Focused Overview   COATINGSTECH_Conference2017_icons-SCIENCE COATINGSTECH_Conference2017_INNOVATION-03
Ray FernandoEndowed Chair for Polymers & Coatings, CalPoly Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Mike Diebold
, Research Fellow, The Chemours Company
Designed for new coatings technology professionals, and intended to provide a detailed introduction to a broad range of practical coatings science topics applicable to all product categories, this short course will help advance your ability to apply your knowledge on research, development, and innovation challenges.

8:30 am – 11:30 am
Pigments for Coatings: Traditional and Enhanced Functionality R&D_ICON COATINGSTECH_Conference2017_INNOVATION-03
Romesh Kumar, Senior Technical Sales Manager for North America, Clariant Plastics & Coatings USA, Inc.
Exploring advances in both organic and inorganic pigments, this course will address the critical properties of opacity, durability, and rheology. Selection of pigments for architectural coatings (interior and exterior), industrial coatings, powder coatings, and road marking paints will be covered, along with the advantages of dispersions in various applications. New insights into nano-particle and dyes will be explored.
