Washington, D.C., March 20, 2013 — The American Coatings Association (ACA) is pleased to announce that Brian Hinderliter, associate professor in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering department of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), is the recipient of its 2013 CoatingsTech Conference John A. Gordon Best Paper Award. The John A. Gordon Best Paper Award recognizes the best paper presented at the CoatingsTech Conference for new and original scientific research towards the advancement of coatings technology. Submissions are judged based on technical merit, including objectivity and experimental design, relevance to coatings technology, and written and oral presentation. Hinderliter receives the honor for his paper entitled, “Water Concentration Distribution in Coatings during Accelerated Weathering,” which he presented at ACA’s 2013 CoatingsTech Conference, held March 11-13 in Rosemont, Ill.
Hinderliter joined VCU’s Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering department in 2010. He spent the previous decade as a research scientist at North Dakota State University investigating coatings’ transport of water with associated ions and coating degradation through measurement and simulations. The techniques he developed and presently employs include Monte Carlo, finite element, and solutions to asymptotic limits through Central Limit Theorem statistical distributions.
The CoatingsTech Conference is the coatings industry's leading technical event featuring a multi-track forum, and this year embraced the theme, “Leaps and Bounds: Re-energizing the Coatings Industry,” underscoring the importance of continued innovation in the coatings industry through education and networking.
In addition to the John A. Gordon Best Paper Award, at its 2013 CoatingsTech Conference ACA also presented the prestigious Mattiello Memorial Lecture, Roon, Student Presenter, and Student Poster Awards. The following are the recipients:
Mattiello Memorial Lecture Award– Dean Webster, North Dakota State University
