ACA will host an Aerosol Technology Seminar for California’s Air Resources Board (ARB) on Feb. 16 at ARB’s Monitoring and Laboratory Division in Sacramento, Calif. The seminar is intended to be informational to ARB staff in order to provide them a fundamental understanding of the aerosol delivery system, but will also highlight specific formulation challenges for aerosol coatings and aerosol adhesives as the agency develops new standards for these two source categories.
ARB has released its preliminary data summaries for aerosol coatings and aerosol adhesives. The preliminary data summaries are the reported results of the agency’s data collection and analysis. These data points become the database upon which a reactivity rulemaking is based, and which ultimately result in stricter air quality standards for the regulated products.
ACA has been actively engaged in this process, submitting comprehensive and detailed comments to ARB and for the vast array of product categories — over 65 — for which ARB is collecting information, since it is critical that the preliminary data summaries are as accurate as possible in order to devise reasonable reactivity standards.
The Aerosol Technology Seminar will provide an overall view of the aerosol delivery system and, hopefully, dispel some of the more common misconceptions about aerosol coatings and adhesives. The seminar prepared by ACA will feature presentations from members of industry and ACA staff, including:
- Pat Gieske of Valspar Corporation on aerosol coatings formulation challenges;
- Bill Frauenheim of Diversified CPC Internationalon propellants;
- Kevin Verville of Summit on valves;
- John Blum of Ball Corporation on cans;
- John Ivancik of The Sherwin-Williams Company on aerosol coating formulation challenges;
- Jim McLarty of Camie-Campbell Inc. on formulation challenges for aerosol adhesives;
- Ed Pisynzki of Chicago Aerosols on the need for specialty categories; and
- Heidi McAuliffe of ACA on the overall benefits of the aerosol coatings/adhesives.
The seminar will also include a Question and Answer session to address both issues/questions that ARB specifically put to the aerosol coatings industry and questions from the industry to the ARB.
ACA’s efforts will demonstrate to ARB the significant impact that major changes to the standards for aerosol coatings and adhesives will have on manufacturers, formulators, fillers, and marketers.
