The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) aims to protect consumers who use hazardous chemicals. The FHSA requires manufacturers to include precautionary language on the immediate container of hazardous household products to help consumers safely store and use those products and to give consumers information about immediate first aid steps in the case of an accident. The FHSA requires that chemical manufacturers of products that are used either by consumers or in a consumer setting be labeled to protect the consumer. The FHSA is not aligned with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) 2012 Hazard Communication Standard nor the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), and the CPSC does not intend to update its regulations.
